News of Christopher Plummer’s death shook a lot of people last week Friday. Christopher played Captain von Trapp in the 1965 movie, The Sound of Music. The movie is a legend’s gift of songs. It is a musical movie based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp family singers. The movie, filled with glorious songs, highlights how the strength of togetherness, love, and sense of community could prevail over the horrors of war.

“The Sound of Music” was a tremendous success known to be one of the highest-grossing and most well-known musical films of all time.

The original release featured 16 songs and this is why I call it a legend’s gift of songs. There are many who know the songs in this movie to form parts of their childhood.

  1. Prelude and “The Sound of Music” – Orchestra and Maria
  2. Overture and Preludium (Dixit Dominus) – Orchestra and Nuns Chorus
  3. “Morning Hymn” and “Alleluia” – Nuns Chorus
  4. Maria” – Nuns Chorus
  5. “I Have Confidence” – Maria
  6. Sixteen Going on Seventeen” – Rolfe and Liesl
  7. My Favorite Things” – Maria
  8. Climb Ev’ry Mountain” – Mother Abbess
  9. The Lonely Goatherd” – Maria and the Children
  10. The Sound of Music” – The Children and the Captain
  11. Do-Re-Mi” – Maria and the Children
  12. Something Good” – Maria and the Captain
  13. “Processional and Maria” (reprise) – Organ, Orchestra and Nuns Chorus
  14. Edelweiss” – The Captain, Maria, the Children and Chorus
  15. So Long, Farewell” – The Children
  16. “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” (reprise) – Chorus and Orchestra

In honour of Christopher Plummer, I’ve asked a few people what their favourite songs from this classic are. See their responses below.

“So Long, Farewell.” I loved the way the children present it with so much precision. Nemi

“Do-Re-Mi.” I watched it just in time when I had learnt to put the tonic solfa to good use. So, I could relate the tonic solfa with the song. Then, the educational aspect of it too – doe (do) a deer, a female deer, ray (re) a drop of golden sun, me(mi)… And I would sing it with purpose then too – Omolara
