“…I had all these big ideas I wanted to let out of my mind…” – Meet Emmanuel Ozor

Can we meet you? Who is Emmanuel Ozor?

My name is Emmanuel Ozor, I’m an artist and when I’m not creating art, I work as an Agricultural Engineer at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD). I am 33 years old, and I hail from Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

Have you always wanted to be an artist? How did your journey as an artist begin and how has it been so far?

My interest in art kicked off at an early age. I used to watch a lot of cartoons, then, try to draw them on paper. I finally decided that I wanted to be an artist/creator because I had all these big ideas I wanted to let out of my mind, and show to the world. And yeah, the journey so far has been productive. My art is out there now for the world to see, and it can only get better.

Your art niche is quite unique? Can you describe it?

It’s mostly Afrofuturism mixed with manga, mainstream comics, and military sci-fi.

Do you think there’s a market for comic art in Nigeria?

Definitely! Take a look at Comicrepublic, they are doing great, and currently leading the way.

Our favourite superhero movies are spin-offs from comics and are ranking in millions of dollars. Do you see yourself working with movie producers in the nearest future?

Yes, I do. God willing.

Tell me about your victories and your challenges as an artist.

My comic book, Galactic Core #1 was nominated 3 times for TheComicFist award for Best Artist, Best Colorist, and Best Writer at the 2018 Lagos Comiccon. My biggest challenge so far has been balancing work with my social life.

Who are your biggest influences?

Jack Kirby,  Stan Lee,  Yusuke Murata,  Kenneth Rocaforte, Jim Lee, Pepe Larraz and Jorge Jimenez.

Tell me about your favourite project?

Galactic Core #1 – It stretched me, and I’m glad the response has been great so far.

What’s the most memorable response you’ve had to your work?

Signing books purchased by the fans at the 2018 Lagos Comiccon, that felt really good. And also, my work with the 2019 Intents Festival.

Who are your target audience?

People from ages 10 – 50. So, Gen Z, Millennials, and Baby Boomers.

What is your dream project?

My dream project is to produce a live action movie of the Galactic Core thrown in with its own AAA video game.

What 3 things does anyone starting in this industry need to know?

  • You must have a stable job where you have a consistent income and allows you to focus on your projects. If not, you will have to work as a freelance illustrator to make a living.
  • Study art fundamentals like anatomy, perspective, force, colour theory, and basic observation. Plus find who or what inspires you.
  • Know why you want to enter this industry

If I want to buy any of your works, how do I go about it?

You can find my work at It is totally free to view.
