Notwithstanding, while you were waiting for your credit alert or swiping your cards, a lot of notable things happened in the creative space this week. As usual, I have curated the top six happenstances to keep you updated in this week’s edition of Creative Round-up. So kindly read to the end.
1. Tiwa Savage Bags Doctorate Degree From Her Alma Mater; University Of Kent
Tiwas Savage recently joined the long list of Nigerian celebrities awarded doctorate degrees from foreign universities. The Singer-songwriter, Afrobeats star, and Kent Business School alumna received an honorary degree on July 15th, 2022, during the University’s graduation ceremonies at Canterbury Cathedral. The Afrobeats singer was awarded a Doctorate for her inspirational and international career in music. So it’s Dr. Tiwa Savage from now on!
2. Tobi Amusan Becomes First Ever Nigerian To Win World Athletics Championship Gold
On Sunday, July 24th, 2022, Tobi Amusan won the women’s 100m hurdles gold at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Tobi Amusan won the race with a 12.06s, ousting her previous record of 12.40 before the semi-finals and 12.12 afterward. Before that, Tobi Amusan had won nine medals (four silver and five bronze). Tobi Amusan’s victory is inspirational and mirrors the benefits of consistency in one’s craft.
3. Tems Cover Of ‘No Woman No Cry’ Features on (Black Panther) Wakanda Forever
Barely a month after she won two BET awards in one night, Nigerian alternate singer Temilade Openiyi famously known as Tems, breaks yet another record. She raised the bar with her rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman No Cry’On July 23rd, 2022, at Comic-Con, when Marvel Studio premiered the trailer video of ( Black Panther) Wakanda Forever. The movie is set to be released on November 11th, 2022.
4. Burna Boy, Tems, Pheelz, And BNXN Make Obama’s 2022 Summer Playlist
In his usual fashion, on July 26th, 2022, The former president of the United States, Barack Obama, released his 2022 Summer Playlist. Following his precedent in 2019 and 2020, the list contains rich afrobeat songs from prominent Nigerian artists. The songs and artists that made the list include: Vibe Out by Tems, Last Last by Burna Boy, and Finesse by Pheelz and BNXN f.ka.Buju. Read the complete list here.
5. MI Abaga Released A New Single Titled ‘The Guy’
On July 22nd, 2022, Famous Chocolate City superstar rapper and TT Creative Grant ambassador, MI Abaga, released a new single, ‘The Guy’. This single comes barely a few weeks after the rapper announced the change of his stage name from MI Abaga to ‘The Guy’ on his social media pages. Interestingly, The single that has received praise and love from fans is off his upcoming album ‘The Guy,’ set for release on August 19th, 2022.
6. BIC Art Master 2022 Contest Application Is Ongoing
The BIC Art Master 2022 competition is open to African creatives. The application closes on August 31st, 2022. The winner bags a cash prize of $2,000, a BIC personalized online gallery, and the opportunity to have their artwork featured in the La BIC collection of art. Other consolation prices include $1,000 for the second position, $500 for the third position, and the national Winner of a Country. Lastly, $250 for the lucky online vote winner.
