Creative Gist: What’s the Best Creative Gift You’ve Ever Received?

Creatives usually tread a path that most people can’t fully understand, and this extends to the kind of gifts they receive. You’ll hear people say,

“Oh, I don’t know what kind of gifts to get my photographer friend”, “my software developer boyfriend has all the gadgets he needs”, or “my wife, the writer, hardly goes out so what should I give her apart from stationery?” And the mother of them all, ‘what do you give someone who has everything?’ Maybe a Starlink? Lol.

On today’s Creative Gist, creatives answer the question, what is the best creative gift you’ve ever received? Are you anxious about what to gift your creative loved ones to make them feel more seen or loved? You’ve just walked into the right conversation.

In junior secondary school, I got garri cake from my friends who wanted to make my birthday special and whatnot. Lol. The garri cake wasn't really spectacular, as it was sloppy and too sugary. Hehe. But, as cliche as it may sound, their thought counted, plus I felt loved and happy. I think it's a creative gift because of the process it took. Garri cake is basically rich man garri with Bournvita, milk and groundnut glued together with enough butter. So it meant a whole lot to me when I received it, and I was happy.

Hahaha. I don't think I've received a ‘creative’ gift from someone before, and I don't really know why. I hardly get gifts like that from people who aren’t my relatives. Even when I do, it’s usually just money or clothes.

I once received a creative gift from a friend. It was an artwork. He drew my face inside a heart shape. It took me by surprise because it wasn’t my birthday or anything. I was in school then and wasn't expecting it. I have never felt so loved as I did that day.

Hehehe. I think the best creative gift I currently own is a custom-made 2-piece outfit I got for myself, and my favourite designer made it. I actually thought it wasn't going to look good on me, but he assured me it would. I turned out to love it when I got it. Surprisingly, I still haven't worn it. The outfit is so unique that I’m waiting for the perfect day to wear it.

My baby brother gave me a handmade card for my birthday some years ago. He wrote the sweetest words and even drew a picture of me. I looked like an ant, but as we all know, it’s the thought that counts. Hahaha.

Did you also find some of the creative gifts our creatives mentioned sweet and touching? While the thought behind a gift trumps its price, a unique and creative gift often carries more weight than a common one.
